Germans from Russia: These ethnic Germans had settled in southern Russia during the late 18th c. and early 19th c. with promises that they could retain their language, religion, and schools, as well as be exempt from military service. The changing political situation in Russia eliminated these concessions and many of these Germans left Russia after a century there.
