The
Printshop and
Bindery have been works of the monks from the early days of the Abbey. They continued the tradition, in modern dress, of the
Scriptoria of medieval Abbeys, in which the monks painstakingly copied books by hand. One of its early publications was a weekly German language paper,
Der Volksfreund,
(1907 to 1924.)
In recent decades, we have also printed various jubilee history books, notably Richardton Heritage (1983 Centennial), Prairie Church (1985 Bismarck Diocese 75th Jubilee) and Beyond the Red River (1989 Fargo Diocese Centennial).
The Abbey no longer operates a commercial printing business, and most our printing needs are outsourced to local printers, however we did replace the press with a quality color copier that can print small jobs directly from our computers. Assumption Abbey makes this service available to the local community. Contact our business manager for more information on this service.
The Bindery, like the Printshop, is a long-time work of the monks and involves much exacting manual labor. Presently, we meet our own binding needs and do an occasional volume bound for the public. Br. Victor Frankenhauser is the master of the trade.
