Commentairies on Benedict's Rule: II
by Terrence Kardong, O.S.B. |
 |
A second collection of articles on the Rule of St. Benedict by the RB scholar Terrence Kardong (the first volume is now out of print). These articles were published between 1988 and 1995 in periodcals all over the world. Since some of these journals are not widely distributed, this anthology makes this material more accessable. Although these articles vary in their technical complexity, all of them are explicitly studies of RB. The author employs the tools of literary and historical criticism to reach his conclusions. (A word of caution: this is not the word by word commentary of the Rule by Fr. Terrence published by The Liturgical Press of Collegeville, MN)

Asking Benedict, A Study Program on the Rule of St Benedict
for Classes and Private Use by Terrence Kardong, O.S.B. |
  |
Asking Benedict is a set of study questions and answers on the Rule of Benedict. It was written for a novice class of men and women and "field-tested" in 1990-91. The questions and the answers have been printed in separate booklets to preserve the integrity of the process. The questions are designed as "hands-on" work on the Rule aimed at giving the participants an experiencein personalresearch. Asking Benedict provides material on virtually every chaper of the Holy Rule. It does not follow verse by verse, but it asks the student to move about the entire Rule, making comparisons. This course requires only one other book for its use: RB 1980, large edition, Collegeville, MN 1981. Important as they are, this course does not require use of Benedict's patristic sources. Asking Benedict works for classes and groub discussions, but it can also be used for private study. The course will challenge both beginners, and those familiar with Rule studies. The series is based on the latest research on the Holy Rule. The questions are derived from recent studies which are fully documented in the resource manual.

Cassian on Chastity, Institute 6, Conference 12, Conference 22
by Terrence Kardong, O.S. B. |
 |
John Cassian (c.360-435 A.D.) was one of the most prolific writers in early Christian mnasticism. After spending years as an apprentice monk in Palestine and Egypt, he eventually settled in southern France. There, he founded monasteries and wrote extensive monastic essays called twelve Institutes and twenty-four Conferences to transmit to the local monks what he had learned in Egypt. Included in his writings are three essays on Christian chastity (Institute 6; Conferences 12 and 22) which have never been translated into English. This is because of their startling frankness, but our own age should not find that a barrier. We should be ready to benefit from Cassian's profound insights into the cture of Christian chasitiy. The present book contains these three essays in a lively English rendition by Terrence Kardong, plus an interpretive introduction by the translator. The ensemble forms of a coherent and substantial body of doctrine by one of the great masters of early monastic thought.

James McLaughlin, The Man With an Indian Heart
by Louis L. Pfaller, O.S.B. |
|
This book is a biography of perhaps the most famous Indian agent in American history. Born in Ontario in 1842, to Irish-American parents, McLaughlin first worked as a blacksmith. He moved to Minnesota when he was twenty-one and married the granddaughter of a Soux and a Scots fur trader. After a time he went to work for an Indian agent, and the two organized the Devils Lake Agency. After the agent's death in 1875, McLaughlin became the Devils Lake agend and served in that capacity until 1881, when he was transfered to the Standing Rock Reservation, home of the famous Sitting Bull and site of a volatile situation characterized by dissension and unrest. Eventually McLaughlin became an Indian inspector, and remained one till his death in 1923. Throughout his career he strove for fair treatment of the Indians in their arguments with the government over land rights and other claims. Though he believed the Indians needed to be civilized, he also belived that part of that effort meant promoting their self-sufficiency, not encouraging them to become totally demendent on government paternalizm. His fifty-two years with the Indians involved him with Indians on all the U.S. Indian reservations and brought him into some of the most extiting incidents in Indian history.
