We are the Benedictine Monks of Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota, and have been living on this prairie for more than one hundred years. Monks, unlike other orders in the Catholic Church, take a vow of stability, they join a particular monastery and live there for the rest of their lives. Thus we have the young and the old living next to each other in harmony. Some may be assigned to parishes, as teachers, as chaplains or as students for a time, but the Abbey is the home for all of them.

The Benedictine day is shaped by prayers, by meals together, by work, and by recreation, as well as by spiritual reading and study. The television set does not play an important role here, and even computer usage is limited to the barest needs. Instead we gather in the Church four times a day for the Divine Office and for the Eucharist.

The monastic life is a quiet life, but it is a deep interior quiet that is charged with the essence of life, that is with the presence of God the Father, of Jesus his son, and the Holy Spirit under the patronage of the Virgin Mary as our mother.

We invite you to share part of this journey with us trough the pages of this web site.

Abbot Brian's new book "The Seven Evil Servants" is a study of the seven deadly sins with an interesting concept on how these have an important effect in our lives.
It is a large format book, 32 pages, and available from our Gift Shoppe.
