DEVELOPMENT OFFICE ODDS & ENDS

New Abbey Enterprise: Br. Bertrand started a new Abbey enterprise this past summer. He is now hand milling soap for sale in the Abbey Gift Shop and the Visitors Information Center. Some of the types of soap he has thus far milled are Silky Soft, Goatsmilk, Sage & Sweetgrass, Grapefruit, Oriental Orange, Honey Harvest, Linden Blossom, and Prairie Cedarwood. All of the soaps contain essential oils and they are beautiful to look at besides! Just the thing for a gift or a guest bathroom.

November Suffrages: Commemoration of the deceased has been part of our Christian tradition from just about the beginning; especially the remembrance of early martyrs. In 998, St. Odilo (d. 1048), an abbot of the famous monastery of Cluny, established a Feast of All Souls for his monks. From this, the commemoration of the deceased spread throughout western Christianity. The entire month of November is associated with prayers for the faithful departed. Here at Assumption Abbey, we have a Book of the Living in which we commemorate our deceased confreres and deceased family members and friends. Throughout the month of November, this book with a candle burning by it, remains open near the monks’ entrance to the church. As we continue this important tradition of commemorating the deceased, we invite you to submit the names of your departed family and friends. You may use the form provided at the bottom of this page for their inclusion in the Book of the Living.

Electrical Rewiring/Generator Project: The electrical engineer has completed his plans and we have received estimates of the cost for this project from contractors. We were able to purchase a used generator in very good shape and this is now in place to be hooked up. Our hope is that this project will begin this fall.

Enclosed Envelope: In this Newsletter, you will find enclosed an envelope which may be used to submit names of family and friends you would like to have included in our Book of the Living. Please complete the form on the bottom of this page and include this in the envelope. This envelope can also be used to make a donation for the various needs of Assumption Abbey.
